Packing jewellery for a trip involves a quiet calculation: you want to look like yourself, but you do not want to spend the holiday worrying about something valuable, or come home to find a favourite piece tangled, scratched or missing. The answer is to pack less, choose better, and pick pieces that are easy to look after.
The Four-Piece Travel Kit
For almost any trip, four pieces are enough: one everyday necklace you barely take off, one pair of simple studs for daytime, one slightly dressier pair of earrings for evenings, and one bracelet or a small ring. Keep everything in the same metal tone and every combination works without thought.
This is not minimalism for its own sake. Fewer pieces means less to lose, less to untangle, and less to think about while you are meant to be enjoying yourself.
Leave the Irreplaceable at Home
The genuinely sentimental pieces — inherited jewellery, an engagement ring you would be devastated to lose — are better off staying at home. Hotel rooms, beaches and airport security are where jewellery goes missing. Travel with pieces you love but could replace.
What Travels Well
Look for hard-wearing base metals and simple shapes. Stainless steel and titanium steel handle heat, humidity and daily wear better than soft alloys. Flat, uncomplicated designs wipe clean; fine filigree and glued settings collect sand and sun cream and are harder to clean on the road.
Secure clasps matter more than you would think. A lobster clasp on a chain is worth the small extra cost when you are sleeping in unfamiliar beds and packing every few days.
Packing Properly
Thread necklaces through a drinking straw or a piece of paper to stop them knotting. Keep earrings paired by pushing them through a button or a small piece of card. Use a soft roll or pouch with separate compartments rather than letting everything share one bag, where pieces scratch each other. Pack jewellery in your hand luggage, never in a checked bag.
Care While You Are Away
The travel rules are the same as at home, just easier to forget. Take pieces off before swimming and showering — pool chlorine and salt water are the two things most likely to ruin a plated finish. Apply sun cream first and let it absorb before putting jewellery on. Rinse and dry anything that meets seawater.
