Waterproof Jewellery: Can You Really Wear It in the Shower, Pool and Sea? - Argesteel

Waterproof jewellery sounds almost too good to be true. Wear it swimming? Yes. In the shower? Yes. At the beach? Yes. But not all jewellery marketed as waterproof actually lives up to the promise. Here is everything you need to know before you buy.

What Makes Jewellery Truly Waterproof?

True waterproof jewellery has two things: a base metal that does not corrode, and a surface coating that holds up to water, salt, chlorine, and sweat. Most standard gold-plated jewellery fails the second test - the thin plating wears off with repeated water exposure, leaving the base metal exposed.

The metals that genuinely do not corrode in water are solid gold, solid platinum, titanium, and surgical-grade stainless steel (316L). Of these, stainless steel is by far the most affordable and practical for everyday jewellery.

What About PVD-Coated Jewellery?

PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating is what separates good stainless steel jewellery from great stainless steel jewellery. Standard gold plating bonds a thin layer of gold on top of a base metal - and that layer lifts, chips, and fades with water exposure. PVD bonds at a molecular level, making the colour finish part of the metal itself rather than sitting on top of it.

The result: a gold, rose gold, or silver finish that stays put through showers, swimming sessions, and summer holidays. At Argesteel, every piece uses PVD coating, which is why we offer a colour guarantee.

Can You Wear It in the Swimming Pool?

Yes - with PVD-coated stainless steel, chlorinated pool water is not a problem. Standard gold-plated jewellery will tarnish and discolour with repeated pool exposure. PVD coating resists the chemical reaction that causes this.

Can You Wear It in the Sea?

Yes. Salt water is one of the most corrosive environments for jewellery. Stainless steel with PVD coating handles salt water without oxidising or losing its finish. You can wear it surfing, snorkelling, or just paddling at the beach.

Can You Wear It in the Shower?

Yes. Shower water, soap, and shampoo have no effect on PVD-coated stainless steel. You can put it on in the morning and not think about it again - which is the point.

What About Perfume and Sweat?

Perfume and sweat are actually more damaging to most jewellery than water. The alcohol in perfume strips gold plating quickly. PVD-coated jewellery is resistant to both, which is why it holds up so well for everyday, active wear.
