If a necklace loses its color after only a few months or leaves green marks on the skin, it is almost always due to the base metal underneath the plating. Gold-plated stainless steel is one of the most sensible constructions in affordable jewelry. Here is why — and also where the limits lie.
The problem with cheap costume jewelry
Most very cheap jewelry consists of a thin coating over a soft, reactive base metal — usually brass or a simple alloy. It looks good in the box. It becomes problematic as soon as the thin surface layer has worn through, because underneath lies a metal that reacts with skin, sweat, and air. Hence the green marks and the dull look after a short time.
Why a stainless steel core makes the difference
Stainless steel is hard, corrosion-resistant, and skin-friendly for most people. A gold plating over it brings two advantages: the coating sits on a stable surface and therefore lasts better. And where the finish gets thinner over time — on clasps or on the inside of a ring — a stable metal appears instead of a reactive one.
This does not mean that such pieces never wear out. They just age significantly better.
Price and value
Solid gold is the standard and expensive accordingly. Gold vermeil — gold plating over sterling silver — is in the middle and looks wonderful, although silver is soft and the finish can wear through with daily use. Gold-plated stainless steel is the accessible end: a fraction of the price, robust and honest in what it is.
For pieces you wear constantly — an everyday necklace, a stacking ring, small hoop earrings — this compromise is usually the right one. You don't wear a solid gold necklace while shopping in a relaxed manner. But you do wear a gold-plated stainless steel one.
Clarity about the limits
Gold-plated stainless steel is plated jewelry. The gold is a surface and wears off over time. It is not solid gold, it is not waterproof, and we do not promise that the color will never fade. What we can say: a stainless steel core gives the coating the best conditions to last a long time.

How to make it last longer
Take off jewelry before water, sports, and sleeping. Put it on only after perfume and lotion. Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Store the pieces in a dry place and separately from each other.
