Gold Plated vs Gold Filled Jewelry: What's the Difference?
June 23, 2026

Shopping for gold jewelry online means running into a lot of terminology: gold plated, gold filled, gold vermeil, solid gold. Each one sounds similar but behaves completely differently in terms of quality, price, and longevity. Here's the honest breakdown.

Solid Gold

The real thing. 18K solid gold is 75% pure gold mixed with other metals for hardness. It never tarnishes, lasts forever, and looks the same in 50 years. It's also expensive — a solid gold necklace can cost hundreds to thousands of euros depending on weight and design. For most everyday jewelry wearers, it's overkill.

Gold Filled

Gold filled is a thick layer of gold (minimum 5% by weight) mechanically bonded to a base metal — usually brass. It's more durable than gold plating and can last 10–30 years with basic care. The catch: it's still expensive (much more than plated), and the base metal is brass, which can cause reactions in people with metal sensitivities.

Gold Vermeil

Gold vermeil is gold plating over sterling silver — at least 2.5 microns thick by EU/US standards. It looks beautiful but sterling silver tarnishes, meaning the base metal can affect the piece over time. Also pricier than standard gold plating.

Gold Plated

A thin layer of gold (typically 0.5–2.5 microns) deposited over a base metal. The quality depends entirely on two things: the thickness of the plating and the quality of the base metal underneath.

Cheap gold plating over brass or copper: will tarnish quickly, turn skin green, and is not recommended.

18K gold plating over stainless steel (what we use at Argesteel): an entirely different story. Stainless steel doesn't corrode, doesn't react with skin, and doesn't turn green. It's hypoallergenic, used in surgical instruments, and structurally superior to brass. The gold layer sits on a stable, inert base — which means it lasts.

Why We Chose 18K Gold Plated Stainless Steel

It's the sweet spot for everyday jewelry. You get the look of solid gold at a fraction of the cost, on a base metal that's more durable and skin-friendly than the alternatives. Our pieces are waterproof, tarnish-resistant, and designed for real daily wear — gym, shower, travel.

The tradeoff is honest: the gold layer will eventually wear with heavy daily use, years down the line. Replating is cheap and easy. With solid gold or gold filled you're paying for permanence. With our pieces you're paying for great design, durability, and access.

What to Look For When Buying Gold Plated Jewelry

  • Base metal: stainless steel or sterling silver only. Avoid brass and copper.
  • Plating karat: 18K is the standard for warm, rich gold tone. 24K is brighter but softer.
  • Transparency: a good brand tells you exactly what's in their pieces.
