How to Care for Gold Plated Jewelry (So It Lasts for Years)
June 23, 2026

Gold plated jewelry is one of the best investments you can make in your everyday look — but only if you know how to take care of it. The good news: it doesn't take much. A few simple habits will keep your pieces looking brand new for years.

At Argesteel, all our jewelry is 18K gold-plated over surgical-grade stainless steel, which already puts you ahead. Stainless steel doesn't rust or corrode, so even if the plating wears in spots, the base metal stays intact. But with the right care, the plating won't wear at all.

Why Gold Plating Fades (And How to Stop It)

Gold plating fades because of friction and chemical exposure — not time. The main culprits are:

  • Sweat and skin oils — acidic and abrasive over time
  • Perfume, hairspray, and lotion — chemicals that break down the plating
  • Chlorine — found in pools and tap water in high concentrations
  • Rubbing against other jewelry — friction strips the surface

Remove these from the equation and your plating lasts dramatically longer.

The Golden Rules for Gold Plated Jewelry Care

1. Put It On Last

Apply perfume, lotion, and hairspray before putting on your jewelry. Let products fully dry first. This one habit alone will double the lifespan of your plating.

2. Take It Off Before Swimming

Chlorine in pools and salt in the ocean both attack gold plating. Even waterproof jewelry has limits — our pieces handle sweat and rain without issue, but extended pool or sea exposure is a different story. Take it off, rinse if needed, dry it, put it back on.

3. Clean It the Right Way

Use a soft, lint-free cloth after wearing. For a deeper clean, dip briefly in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, then rinse and dry immediately. Never use ultrasonic cleaners, silver polish, or abrasive cloths — these strip plating fast.

4. Store Each Piece Separately

Jewelry scratches against itself when stored in a pile. Store pieces in individual pouches or compartments. Our pieces come with pouches — use them.

5. Remove Before Gym, Cleaning, and Sleeping

Sweat during exercise is fine for short periods, but extended exposure adds up. Cleaning products (bleach, detergents) are the worst for plating. Sleeping in your jewelry causes consistent low-level friction that wears plating unevenly over time.

What to Do If It Does Tarnish

Even with good care, some pieces may develop minor tarnishing over time — usually in areas of high contact. A gentle polish with a soft cloth will restore shine. If tarnishing is significant, a jeweler can replate affordably. With a stainless steel base like ours, replating works perfectly because the base metal stays in perfect condition underneath.

How Long Does 18K Gold Plating Last?

With basic care: 2–5 years of daily wear. With excellent care: longer. The thickness of the plating matters most — thin flash plating (common in fast fashion) lasts weeks. Our 18K gold plating is applied at a thickness designed for real daily use.

Built for Everyday Wear

Our entire range is designed to be worn daily without overthinking it. The stainless steel base means no green skin, no rust, no surprises. Browse our gold necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings — all made to last.

Take care of your pieces and they'll take care of your look.
